The Chinese Shar-Pei originates in the south. Western lines show deep wrinkles; Hong Kong types have fewer. Ranked 64th by the AKC, its soft face, sturdy frame, and wary stance toward strangers influence behavior. Under stress or confusion it may revert to old guarding instincts, staying alert until the threat passes.
